Short answer: No breathing count makes cold-water immersion safe. Keep breathing continuously, do not hyperventilate or hold your breath, keep the face above water, and exit immediately if breathing, movement, or judgment becomes uncontrolled.
Why breathing changes in cold water
Sudden cold exposure can trigger an involuntary gasp and rapid breathing. That response can impair control and raise drowning risk; it is a reason to avoid abrupt, solo, or face-first immersion—not a challenge to overcome with a fixed count.

Health limits
Cardiovascular, blood-pressure, circulation, respiratory, neurologic, pregnancy, medication, fainting, or temperature-regulation concerns require qualified guidance. A warmer setup or shorter exposure is not automatically safe for a particular person.
