Short answer: There is no universal beginner temperature or duration. Water temperature, immersion depth, equipment, supervision, health context, and symptoms all matter. Follow the exact equipment instructions and leave immediately if breathing or movement becomes uncontrolled.

Why a single beginner number is not defensible

Cold-water immersion studies use different temperatures, depths, durations, populations, and outcomes. A number used in one study is not automatically a safe home prescription. Colder water and deeper immersion increase the challenge; staying longer is not proof of greater benefit.

Evidence and limits

A systematic review of cold-water immersion found mixed wellbeing outcomes and an acute inflammatory response after exposure. A separate review found possible benefit for perceived soreness after strenuous exercise, but protocols varied. These findings do not establish a universal beginner dose or general-health benefit.
